Election Engagement – Bill Shreve

“Cast your vote, not on a partisan basis, not based on your biases, but vote your values. Vote the values of human dignity and equality.
Vote the values of the rock on which this country was built. Vote.”
Presiding Bishop Michael Curry

The Episcopal Church encourages us to vote and to engage in elections in any way we can. The Office of Government relations highlights ideas for engagement in their Vote Faithfully Election Engagement Toolkit.

In this toolkit, you learn how to join a team of Episcopal Election Activators, Episcopalian volunteers who help promote and facilitate local non-partisan voter engagement efforts. The toolkit also contains information on voter registration, on ways to work on election day, on publicly encouraging others to vote, and on how to observe November 3 as “Vote Faithfully Sunday” to help folks remember and prepare for Election Day. For Vote Faithfully Sunday, the toolkit provides reflections, Bible passages, music and Prayers of the People for an Election.

Many secular organizations also promote nonpartisan election engagement. “Civic Holidays” are nonpartisan days of action that strengthen and celebrate our country’s democracy! They have a toolkit on their website that provides communication materials, ideas to mobilize students, and ideas for celebrating voter participation in the election.

A range of voter resources are available from the California Voter Foundation.
The League of Women Voters of California is a nonpartisan, grassroots organization working to protect and expand voting rights, build grassroots power in our communities, drive policy change on the biggest challenges facing our state, and ensure everyone is represented in our democracy.  Through 60 local grassroots Leagues across California, the LWV works on local issues, develops and trains local civic leaders, and organizes around critical policy and social issues. The League uses an integrated voter engagement model, which research shows is one of the best ways to increase voter turnout and civic participation. You can work with the LWV of California or locate your local LWV on the website .
